Anatomical Perspective
Despite its name, the funny bone is not actually a bone. It’s a colloquial term for the ulnar nerve, a sensitive nerve that runs along the inner elbow [1] . When this nerve is hit or compressed, it causes a tingling sensation and a strange feeling that can make you laugh or cry out in pain [2] .
Cultural Significance
The term “funny bone” has transcended its anatomical origins and found its way into popular culture. It’s often used as a metaphor for a person’s sense of humor or ability to make others laugh [3] . This connection between the funny bone and humor has given rise to the naming of comedy clubs, like the Funny Bone Comedy Club.

Another misconception is that hitting the funny bone is always a laughing matter. While it can elicit laughter, it can also cause significant pain and discomfort [2] .
Medical Perspective
If you hit your funny bone, the first step is to give the affected area some time to recover. Gently massaging the area can help alleviate the tingling sensation [8] .
